I’m currently going through what many people say is one of the most stressful things you can ever do, buying a house. Even though the end is now in sight, and thankfully we should be into our new home next week, it’s been a long and arduous journey and almost a year since we first put our flat on the market. The move can’t come soon enough and while I doubt I’ll forget the painful process any time soon, this moment has been well worth the wait. After all, having spent five years in my current place, it would have been easy to stay put and be comfortable but where’s the challenge in that?

Weigh up your options - Like finding a house, the first job you are offered is not necessarily the right one for you. Whilst it is easy to get frustrated with a job search, it’s important to take your time getting it right, it will be worth it in the long run. Sometimes the perfect opportunity appears at the start and this is great when it happens, but if not do not let your desire for a new role cloud your judgement. Take a step back and ask yourself if this will give you the step up you want and the opportunities and challenges you need
Stay focused – It is easy to get distracted and loose interest in your current position when you decide to leave, however stay focused and ensure you continue to produce a high quality of work as you never know who you’ll end up working with later in your career
Reserve judgement – Many people judge something on face value, however try to be open minded when it comes to hearing about new opportunities. Whilst you may not perceive a company to be the kind you want to work for, the perfect roles can often be the ones you least expect. Remember it’s the challenging brands that can be the most interesting and people can often make a job, so don’t make a decision until you’ve met the team and can make an informed choice
Don’t be put off – Don’t get disheartened if it takes a long time, just focus on the end game and securing the right role for this point in your career. It’s a full time role looking for a job and juggling this with your current one can be tricky so allow yourself the time to find the right fit
Use intermediaries – It’s a personal choice as to whether you use a ‘middle man’ but we can offer insight into not just the role but the team and company, as well as taking away the pain of the job hunting process
