The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) sits at the top of the marketing hierarchy and is responsible for shaping the organisation’s marketing strategy in line with the overall business objectives. They are an integral part of an organisation, leading on brand management, advertising, market research, product development and communications. As part of the C-Suite, the CMO reports directly into the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and leads the organisation’s marketing team.

Day-to-Day Duties:

Depending on the size of an organisation, the responsibilities of a CMO can vary, however most commonly include:

  • Establishing marketing objectives that align with the overall goals of the organisation and drive revenue growth.

  • Developing, implementing and managing marketing campaigns to support the marketing goals and overall business strategy.

  • Overseeing and coordinating the marketing budget effectively across the entire marketing department.

  • Staying up to date with the latest industry trends and developments to inform the marketing strategies.

  • Working in partnership with other departments to ensure marketing strategies are seamlessly aligned.

  • Tracking and reporting on marketing campaign KPIs to make data and evidence-driven decisions.

  • Building, managing and driving the brand awareness within the industry via appropriate strategies.

  • Leading and managing the marketing team to build an efficient, high-performing and valuable practice.

Essential Skills & Experience:

As the most senior employee in the marketing department, the CMO is highly accomplished, typically with over 10 years of all-encompassing marketing experience, as well as experience within a leadership role. Essential skills include:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstratable experience in developing successful strategic marketing campaigns

  • Ability to lead a team in a constantly changing environment

  • Proven ability to effectively allocate resources and budget

  • Excellent analytical skillset and strong understanding of data analysis tools

  • Strong business and financial acumen

  • Proficiency in working with various marketing tools across both traditional and modern channels.
