Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) Profession Map
The Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) has recently refreshed its excellent ‘Profession Map’, a key document which summarises the essential role internal communicators play in organisations. It also elaborates on the fundamental knowledge and skills expected to fulfil the role of an IC Professional and be successful.
As the IoIC state, ‘The Profession Map Framework’ sets the benchmark for internal communication professionals and teams. It allows individuals to articulate the role of internal communication within organisations; to map skills and knowledge, identify gaps and create personal development plans; and to establish their career trajectory within the internal communication profession.’
The framework is grounded in six areas of activity, highlighting the knowledge and skills required, and separating these into the four levels at which internal comms professionals might be working within their organisation. These areas are also underpinned by a range of behaviours which internal communicators should display in order to be as successful and as effective as possible in their roles.
The IoIC undertakes consistent reviews of the framework, in discussion with its Professional Development Advisory Board, which VMA GROUP’s CEO, Andrew Harvey, plays an active role in. The Board consists of a group of Internal Communicators from varied backgrounds of varying organisations and sectors, which allows for the frameworks to consistently be effective and reflective of the current place of internal communications in the business world.
