​This survey was conducted as the Covid-19 pandemic neared its first confirmed year in Europe. From the start of the Covid-19 crisis, we heard countless stories about how the communications function was being tested and stretched. It had to step up at record speed and under great strain to safeguard its colleagues and employers.

This report is based on our ongoing conversations within the communications industry and the snapshot survey responses of 120 in-house communications leaders in Europe. In February 2021, we asked them about the skills found in the profession, and the appetite to recruit for them now and in the future.

For those that confirmed their teams had gaps, we asked them whether they are now recruiting to build these skills into their functions for the future, or whether they were still dealing with hiring freezes.
