The Pulse 2017
In its fourth year, and with input from over 300 communication professionals, The Pulse 2016/17 is the most comprehensive tool currently available for benchmarking the function, structure and future of corporate communications departments across Asia. Since 2013, VMAGroup has been running The Pulse to determine the leading issues being faced by Asia’s top communications professionals. This year, practitioners across the region told us that the last 12 months have brought mixed fortunes. Despite economic growth continuing to provide business opportunities, the looming Chinese slowdown is causing communications resourcing growth to be pre-emptively put on ice. Digital tools are giving communications teams energy and a fresh licence to operate; they are also bringing complexity to team structure and resourcing. In the midst of it all, many wondered if – a few years down the line – the corporate communications function would still exist in quite the same format as today. This latest piece of research is a must read for every communications professional working in Asia Pacific.  To read more and request a copy please click here.

Inside Insight 2017
Inside Insight 2017 is VMAGROUP’s largest IC survey to date. This year sees the sixth edition published with responses from over 550 internal communications professionals. This year’s comprehensive study dives into the challenges and opportunities within the industry as viewed by those working in the sector. This inclusive study is divided into nine chapters; profile of the IC professional, your IC department, team size, channels, budgets, remuneration, interim, recruitment and personal development.

2017 sees the first chapter on the interim IC specialist published, reflecting the growth and demand for interim management and the challenges for interim professionals.  Almost 30% of the respondents work in the interim profession making it clear that the clear cut nature of the contractors project with clear cut deliverables is often more appealing than permanent positions with broader and ongoing remits. The report also covers the hot topic of Brexit as it currently looms large over the UK economy. However to date Brexit seems to have had a limited impact on our IC respondents but time will tell.

Beyond Communications: a CEO perspective of reputation leadership

Between May and August 2016, VMAGroup conducted 40 in-depth interviews with CEOs across Europe to establish their view of communications’ role within leadership and reputation. The findings were a resounding affirmation that, in the modern business arena, the communications director has a far broader task on their hands than their predecessors did in years gone by. Whilst the day-to-day skillset of the profession remains vital, those interviewed stressed the importance of a new approach and philosophy altogether.

Covering The Maternity Paternity Leave Gap
2013 - 2014
A study of what interim managers, freelancers and employers working in marketing, corporate communications and PR think about maternity and paternity leave. Statutory rights for both maternity/paternity pay and leave are now very much a reality, but does this place an unfair burden on business? The Government is considering extending paternity leave rights so that fathers can share leave with their partner in an allowance called ‘flexible parental leave’. Where does this leave the employer and how do they fill the gap when a key player takes maternity/paternity leave? This study, which polled the opinions of employers, freelancers and interim managers, set out to investigate this.

Investor Relations Industry Report
2012 - 2013
Ask any fund manager how the FTSE 250 has fared over the past year and they will tell you that it has continued to do what it has done over the past decade or so: outperform the FTSE 100. In 2012 the midcap index rose 23% against the FTSE 100’s 10%. VMA Group is proud to work with 70% of FTSE 100 companies across all our practice areas, yet in the Investor Relations practice, our focus in 2012 has been on the FTSE 250 companies and it is from this index that the majority of our investor relations mandates have come.

Internal Communications Survey
Firstly, the vast majority of respondents recognise that to be an effective internal communicator, three core competencies in particular need to be effectively honed. These are the ability to influence and build effective relationships; strategic planning skills; and, above all, strong business acumen. It is the recognition of the importance of this final attribute which is most gratifying, given the substantial growth that we have seen at VMA Group in employers demanding commercial awareness. Secondly, despite the continued pressure on internal communicators to prove their value, it is perhaps surprising that the average function has maintained its current headcount size and budget – in many cases this has actually increased. However, this positive sentiment was tempered by a more mixed picture which emerged in terms of advocacy for internal communications amongst senior leaders. The perception amongst respondents is that advocacy has fallen back to the levels seen in our first study; a surprising result, given that many also feel that they are an integral part of the senior leadership team.
