An organisation at the heart of the clean energy transition is looking for a talented External Communications Manager to help the organisation engage and educate key audiences about its work, role and vision through coordinated, strategic communications.

This role will suit a generalist with experience across each of the communications channels (stakeholder engagement, media relations, internal communications and digital), with an integrated approach to communications, and who can work across several project areas.

Key responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute a long-term plan of stakeholder engagement in collaboration with the Regulatory Affairs and Customer Engagement teams.

  • Develop communications handling plans and strategies to cover project key delivery phases.

  • Develop a close relationship with counterparts in BEIS and relevant trade bodies

  • Maintain a stakeholder dashboard to inform senior directors of current audience views and feedback. Gather useful audience intelligence and share it with senior colleagues to inform strategy and planning.

  • Build relationships with senior figures within the organisation and externally among key influencers and opinion formers.

  • Write or commission necessary deliverables to support engagement, such as speeches, presentations, and occasional newsletters. Participate in decision-making over what content or collateral is required by stakeholders.

  • Event management, including managing platform speaking appearances and company attendance at external events.

  • Help build and maintain a database of key stakeholder contacts enabling the organisation to communicate effectively with them in proactive or reactive scenarios.

  • Collaborate closely with DCC colleagues managing external and internal communications, regulatory affairs, strategy and customer engagement, so that Corporate Affairs operates in an integrated way.

Skills and Experience:

  • 3-5 years proven success in managing communications in-house or agency side.

  • Strong relationship-building and influencing skills.

  • Personal credibility and confidence, accustomed to offering counsel to colleagues and willing to challenge appropriately.

  • Excellent organisational skills, accustomed to balancing multiple deadlines and priorities.

  • Results-focused, with a sound understanding of communication measurement, gathering/using data, and evaluation, matched by keenness to act on the results.

  • Capable of rapidly assimilating complex policy or technical detail and then explaining this clearly to lay audiences.

  • A thorough and methodical approach to stakeholder analysis and activity planning.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Adept at tailoring communications to the needs of different audiences, founded on a thorough understanding of their unique needs.

  • Flexible; respond positively and quickly to unexpected developments.

  • High levels of personal initiative and a positive outlook.
