VMAGROUP appoints The Salvation Army's first commercial Head of Communications
The Salvation Army is a faith-led international charitable organisation, with a worldwide membership of over 1.7 million, consisting of soldiers, officers and adherents. Founded in 1865 in London by William Booth and his wife Catherine, the organisation sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute and hungry. Currently, the Salvation Army is present in 132 countries, running charity shops, shelters for the homeless, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid.
Following the increased demand in the communications function across the industries, the Salvation Army was too in a need of communications support. The Salvation Army approached VMAGROUP, as this was the first time, they were looking to hire a commercial Head of Communications. The challenge was to find a person with previous third-sector experience, whose values aligned with the organisation's ethos, in order to increase the reach and impact of The Salvation Army.
The key responsibilities included promoting the organisation's mission, developing and delivering communications to engage the audience, working closely with stakeholders, and managing budgets. Additional responsibilities consisted of staff management and contributing to the various boards and councils as required.
Following the search, Linda Mackenzie was appointed for the role. Linda is a graduate and a Chartered Member of the CIPR, with postgraduate diplomas in Public Relations, International Communications and Crisis Media Response. She was awarded the MBE for her work, leading the communications for a global change management programme with the Royal Navy. With over a decade of senior-level, strategic communications experience gained in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, including USPG, Stonyhurst College and Rochester Diocesan Board of Finance, Linda was a perfect fit for the role.
Linda joined the Salvation Army in August 2021 and since then has ensured an effective, transparent and accountable delivery of communications, reflecting the organisation's mission.
