Where are all the women?
I was delighted to attend Recruiter Magazine’s Fast 50 celebration event recently, in recognition of VMA Group’s ranking as one of the UK’s fastest growing recruitment companies.
Having been warmly greeted on arrival I knew I was in the right place but walking into the room, I had to check that I hadn’t mistakenly taken a wrong turning from hanging my coat to getting a glass of wine!
The reason was that I walked into a packed room, full of men! Looking more closely there were women there. Two of them, plus me and our hosts!
Now, I’m not complaining and the chaps I spoke with were all very pleasant, but it seems surprising in a profession that has such a mixed balance between genders that more women weren’t represented
Was it because they had other things to do that evening or was it due to the sectors there? Looking at the Top 50 list, it does comprise a high number of IT, finance, oil & gas and industrial recruitment businesses and perhaps they attract a higher proportion of male consultants?
Or, perhaps women aren’t taking on the top positions for some reason as certainly the people there were all owners or directors?
It would be interesting to know the percentage of men to women in these fastest growing companies to see if my experience that evening was sector-driven, level driven or something completely unrelated!
But it did make me wonder, is VMA Group, with a female Executive Chairman and female Group MD, the exception rather than the rule in recruitment?
