What’s coming up in 2014?
Digital Comms takes centre stage
Here at VMA Group Asia, we have seen 2013 as the year of Digital Communications in Asia in terms of recruitment activity and resource investment. Whilst standalone Digital Communications function is still a fairly novel concept in Asia, 67% of respondents from our recent Pulse report predict that social media will become the main platform used to communicate with their customers and stakeholders, therefore experience in this area is fast becoming a highly sought-after skill in new recruits. All signs suggest that recruitment and training activity in this area will continue to grow, to match the increased demand.
Diversification of resources within Brand Comms
This year, Brand teams appear to be feeling the pressure, with data from the Pulse revealing under-resourced teams struggling with a heavy workload. More than half of the respondents in this functional area (53%) feel that in 2013 their current team size is not adequate. Simply expanding the team doesn’t seem to be the obvious solution, however only 19% believe that more people will be hired to spread the workload. Instead, outsourcing work to external agencies (62%) or hiring contractors on a temporary basis (44%) were the two most popular responses to this question.
Benefits and bonus
The differences we saw this year was around private healthcare which rose across Asia by 12% in packages, but a steep 21% decline for flexible working. 34% of Communicators received an 11-20% bonus and over 34% has 20+ holiday days.
Future regional growth
51% respondents of the Pulse, predict that their businesses are planning to expand their communications team in South East Asia (ex-Singapore) in 2014. Specifically Indonesia (24%), Malaysia (21%) and Thailand (19%). Many organisations still find Singapore and HK tough markets in which to find experienced communication professionals, and within emerging markets such as Indonesia, it’s fair to say the pressure is much greater, with even smaller pools of talent available.
