In the past few months, I’ve spoken at various industry events around the world and there are key questions that have come up regarding the market and skills that are going to be demanded from communications and marketing professionals in 2018.
Here at VMAGROUP, we conducted a poll with our consultants who continually have their ears to the ground for their insights based on their conversations with clients and other empirical evidence.
From a recruitment perspective, we’re going to be seeing an increased demand for digitally savvy practitioners with extensive channel knowledge i.e. the ability to leverage digital channels and experience with email, mobile, social media, search, paid-for advertising and data analytics. Considering the evolving digital transformation of the communications and marketing functions, we can expect to see digital specific titles disappear from roles in the next four to five years as all jobs will be digital as a standard.
Macro factors such as Brexit and the proliferation of technologies are accelerating the rate of change within organisations. To assist with these transitions, employers are looking for change communications professionals with strong stakeholder engagement skills. Change specialists will be tasked to develop and manage relationships with more stakeholders than ever before.
Interestingly, we are now starting to see millennials moving into management roles and they’re demanding more collaboration and open communication from their organisations. Employers will need to adapt to attract the new wave of talent or risk becoming stuck in an outmoded management style.
As we look ahead for the New Year, we can see that change is inevitable. Organisations and individuals that are well equipped and willing to adapt to the evolving environment will have the best chance of survival.
